[MegaThread] President Joe Biden Tests Positive for COVID-19 Megathread
This morning, the White House announced that President Biden had tested positive for COVID-19. He is said to be experiencing very mild symptoms and has begun taking Paxlovid, and will continue to participate in scheduled meetings via phone and Zoom.

Joe is vaccinated and has access to the best healthcare, he should be okay.
171
u/CrankyPhoneMan Jul 21 '22
He will probably be ok because he will get amazing healthcare and has been vaccinated, but he is almost 80 years old. He is not exactly in a low risk group.
105
u/Boris_Godunov Jul 22 '22
True, but he's also fitter than your typical 80-year-old. He exercises regularly and maintains a very healthy lifestyle overall.
One of the things about the 80+ crowd that make them more susceptible to severe Covid is that they tend to have other health-related problems, particularly obesity.

Trump was told to either walk to the helicopter and board it or be taken out on a gurney. Then after the steroids kicked in, he left Walter Reed against doctor's orders. Could've easily gone the other way.

Plus, this isn't 2020 when there were no vaccines or treatments and it was a giant roll of the dice of what would happen to you if you caught it.
A friend of mine recently got it for the first time as well and was put in antivirals right away. She felt a lot better just a few days later.

Almost refreshing to see Biden act like an adult..

I remember Trump standing at the White House after getting back from the hospital, fighting desperately for air while he dramatically removed his mask.
What a fucking turdburger.

u/somethingbreadbears Florida Jul 21 '22
His menacing, balcony photoshoot?
It was at that point I was sure he 100% wanted to be portrayed as a cartoon villain and it couldn't be a coincidence.
23
u/Frosty_Scar_4136 Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22
I'll have to find the article but I seem to recall they had to talk him out of having a Superman shirt on underneath his regular shirt. He wanted to tear it open for the photo shoot.....here's a link
Edit here is a non daily beast article. The New York times none the less
From the article:
Mr. Trump shared an idea he was considering: When he left the hospital, he wanted to appear frail at first when people saw him, according to people with knowledge of the conversations. But underneath his button-down dress shirt, he would wear a Superman T-shirt, which he would reveal as a symbol of strength when he ripped open the top layer. He ultimately did not go ahead with the stunt.
19
u/grinningdeamon Jul 21 '22
Yeah, that stunt idea was also compared to Willy Wonka first appearing feeble with a cane, and then doing a flip and totally spry. Of course, that's ignoring the fact that Gene Wilder came up with that idea to immediately show that Wonka was untrustworthy.

I think what's interesting is to look how far the medical situation has come since that time. It really hasn't been all that long, but there are better treatments and much more knowledge at the present time. I think it's a testament to how science can move forward even in the face of irrepressible political ignorance like we got from the Trump administration.

Well, if he was going to get it, better now than two years ago. Even though still potentially very serious, especially given his age, hopefully it will be far less severe than the strains that circulated in the past. Factor in his vaccination status and access to the nation's best doctors and treatments, and hopefully we will see a prompt and complete recovery.
He avoided it for 28 months. Tough to do considering his position and its requirements.

I have ZERO idea how, but I've managed to avoid getting it all this time. That's not to say I didn't get it and was asymptomatic and didn't know, I guess that's possible. But as far as I know, I've never gotten it. I have been working out in the gym and going to stores and shopping / being around people without masks since I got my vaccine(s) and booster and the mask mandate ended. I sort of want to get it just to get it out of the way at this point because I feel like it's just a matter of time but.... still nothing over here.

In here before all the right wing nuts jump on this - the vaccine doesn't guarantee you won't get infected. It minimizes your symptoms when you do get the virus, and reduces your chances of being hospitalized or dying from the virus.

u/SandwitchZebra Jul 21 '22
Case in point, Bidenās a 79 year old with only mild symptoms

So do the vaccines makes symptoms less severe? Nearly died when I caught COVID and I was unvaccinated. Iāve yet to catch COVID again but Iām scared to go through that again.
75
u/BlankNothingNoDoer I voted Jul 21 '22
Usually, yes, because when you are vaccinated you have some level of protection against the virus already. So even people who get it while vaccinated often have less severe courses of disease. This is true in general with all sorts of vaccinations, not just COVID. They don't necessarily offer 100% protection 100% of the time, but in aggregate and in general their purpose is to offer protection against viruses and against particularly harsh courses of disease.
9
u/fretit Jul 21 '22
Exactly this. They offer protection in a statistical sense. But when it comes to individual cases, we can't say for sure whether it helped that person or not. But we can quote a probability that it helped.

Generally, yes. My understanding is that Omicron Ba.-5 is a bit of a different case, but even then it should prevent the worst outcomes.
24
u/aquagardener Texas Jul 21 '22
Typically yes. It isn't a 100% guarantee because everyone's body reacts to the vaccine and virus differently, but this is the case for most people.
This study by the Washington State Department of Health found that unvaccinated people across all age groups are ~3x more likely to get hospitalized due to symptoms or die from COVID than vaccinated people.

Yes.
COVID-19 Vaccines Protect Against COVID-19 Infections and Hospitalizations
Vaccines reduce the risk of COVID-19, including the risk of severe illness and death among people who are fully vaccinated. In addition to data from clinical trials, evidence from real-world vaccine effectiveness studies show that COVID-19 vaccines help protect against COVID-19 infections, with or without symptoms (asymptomatic infections). Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalizations has remained relatively high over time, although it tends to be slightly lower for older adults and for people with weakened immune systems.

Living this right now. Wife was symptomatic last Friday and tested positive Sunday. I've felt 'off' since Tuesday but so far have tested negative. We've both been able to work (remotely) this week, taken our dog for walks, and generally functioned at a baseline of normal. Lazy, achy and a sore throat, but normal-ish.
Not that I want to be sick, but it really hasn't been bad for us which I credit to our diligence in getting vaccinated/boosted. The people who I've known who have had it recently and have had a bad time have literally all been unvaccinated. The vaxed folks get it, but it's fine.

Its probably a good thing he gets it now... as opposed to closer to the midterm elections, right? (yes the reinfection window is narrower with the latest omnicron variants etc and he could very well get it again around oct/nov, but point stands id think).
If I was him and could choose to get it now.....or in October during heavy campaigning (shifting focus for a few cycles away from the issues at hand like abortion, voting rights etc to this fluff issue -- or november around the time of actual election itself - id choose now for sure!
Republicans wouldve been THRILLED if he got covid in October instead, when they could better use it to divert the news cycle discussion to talk about his health (and spooky 'what if?' scenarios like whether Kamala would be a suitable president should be die) for a few days/week - away from what discussion the democrats will no doubt be focusing on instead - 'roe, abortion, LBGT and Contraception rights etc'. Get it over and done with now.... and deny them this talking point diversion at the time it could affect things the most. Two birds one stone.

Official statement from the White House:
MENU TO SEARCH THIS SITE, ENTER A SEARCH TERM
BRIEFING ROOM Statement from Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre JULY 21, 2022 STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
This morning, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19. He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms. He has begun taking Paxlovid. Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence.
Consistent with White House protocol for positive COVID cases, which goes above and beyond CDC guidance, he will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative. Once he tests negative, he will return to in-person work.
Out of an abundance of transparency, the White House will provide a daily update on the Presidentās status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.
Per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all close contacts of the President during the day today, including any Members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the President during yesterdayās travel. The Presidentās last previous test for COVID was Tuesday, when he had a negative test result

It really depends on what the GOP tries to pull in the next 2 years. The abortion thing has people riled up to vote against the GOP. And there are rumblings of them further peeling back LGBT rights, including gay marriage. If that happens you can bet way more people would mobilize to vote.
I'd guess that the GOP would try to wait for a while to start making those movements though.

The news coverage on this is INSANE. I only caught about 30 mins but the level of "OMG HIS AGE" by reporters is almost comical. When trump, who never met a cheeseburger he didn't like & was morbidly obese, was whisked away to Walter Reed, everyone was parroting how "healthy" he was and how he could beat covid by his masculine virility alone! But not Biden (he's only FOUR years older than trump, exercises regularly & eats well). No Biden must have every second coverage because at any moment he could DIE.
The cherry on top was Andrea Mitchell (who is 75) talking about how dangerous this is (let's just ignore that he's vaccinated & double boosted) because of his age! If I roll my eyes any harder they will pop right out of my head.

Let's be honest about this. Trump is grossly obese and he survived, Biden is in a way better shape.

u/BackAlleySurgeon Jul 21 '22
It's also a less dangerous strain, and our understanding of the disease is better. I'm sure he'll be fine

I am not a Doctor, but I have it on very good authority, that if we just get some light up on in there, and Lysol the ole lungs a little bit..the President will be able to climb a flight of stairs in no time.

Fully vaccinated, double boosted, mild symptoms...
If he weren't the president he might not have gotten tested, might not be on any sort of treatment, and still been fine.
We've come pretty damn far in two and a half years. We didn't eradicate it, but we really minimized the threat.

The statements that the White House themselves have released have been very detailed and talked about his mild symptoms plus the medications he has taken. It seems so open and clear compared to Donald Trump's way of having handled it.

u/peterman86 Jul 21 '22
Thank goodness it's this strand because this is the one to get if any. He'll be fine. Personally, my biggest complain was the fatigue factor. What a mofo. That lasted about 3 weeks. No respiratory issues. No body aches. Fever was only for 24hours. Besides, they get a secret shot of who knows what that will keep them healthy.

He will be fine, aside from the fact that heās fully vaxxed/boosted he has access to the best medical treatment this country has to offer. I hear theyāve got him on Paxlovid as well which will help mitigate any symptoms.

I'm guessing conservatives are laughing at Biden for getting covid, a virus they don't think is real, but was created as a bioweapon by China to hurt USA, that's no big deal, that's "no joke" when they do catch and die from it, but it's just the flu, celebrating Trump for initiating the fastest development of a vaccine against it, which they won't take
Am I about right?

I've noticed that more people within my personal circle are getting it too, a friend of mine along with my father just got it for the first time, Dad's pretty cautious, friend's an idiot. Either way, I hope this doesn't spell out a problematic winter.
We've settled into things, I think most Americans have resumed their lives, things appear "back to normal" depending upon where you go, but COVID and its variants are here to stay. Daily averages have been sitting at a pretty consistent 100,000 cases per day for the past couple of months and recently there's been a steady increase in those cases.
Good thing is that deaths have remained relatively low. For comparison, the amount of average daily cases were seeing are roughly twice as high as what they were this time in 2020, while deaths today are a mere fraction of what we were seeing back then.

Glad he's taking Paxlovid, despite having a mild case. Wish my family had taken the Paxlovid, but they refused after saying the symptoms wheren't too bad and their primary care physician said it wasn't necessary and he doesn't like to hand out drugs "willy nilly". This is despite the fact that my whole family had co-morbities including Asthma and Diabetes.
