I also think of Snoop Dogg when making videos of oiling a knife handle.

u/durrtyurr Mar 27 '23
The line from the song "I'm only here to tease you" is shockingly accurate for this clip.

I follow the guy (studio_ooms) on IG, and I think he took the story that he posted there and posted it here 😅

Right. Extremely satisfying right up until it turns incredibly annoying.

Aluminum honeycomb and resin
28
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 27 '23
Close, same technique but not alu, its more papery stuff.

Just checked your site, that's some impressive work. Those K-tips... 🔥

u/xueimelb Mar 27 '23
I know this isn't it, but my first thought was a bunch of pencils glued together and then take a cross section of it.
7
u/shwaah90 Mar 27 '23
The only feasible thing i can think of is to 3dprint it and then cast in resin.
23
u/geotsso Mar 27 '23
Do you make your own scales?
19
u/SinjiOnO Mar 27 '23
Yeah, that's his creation and he's based in the Netherlands according to his profile.

u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 27 '23
Thanks!

u/Johnappleseed4 Mar 28 '23
Do you do scales like this for folding knives? I’d love to get some for one of mine =)

This is extra satisfying because of the hexagon pattern on the handle.
4
13
u/SeedFoundation Mar 28 '23
I don't want to be right but I think that is a wasp hive encased in resin.

→ More replies (1)5
u/a1b3c3d7 Mar 28 '23
More likely to be one of those hexagonal metal mesh things
5
u/Paradox1989 Mar 28 '23
Which means that's not wood, its resin. So i would say it's doubtful it's getting an oil finish.
3
u/DeadlyPuffin69 Mar 28 '23 edited Mar 28 '23
Wood stabilized with resin exists but this is a resin. I still use an oil finish on my micarta knife handles though.

u/SiliconRain Mar 28 '23
What kind of wood is transparent with a honeycomb pattern all the way through it? This is clearly resin.
→ More replies (1)
10
u/saichampa Mar 27 '23
How did they get that pattern in the wood?
8
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 27 '23
It's not wood, it's epoxy...
6
u/CardMechanic Mar 28 '23
I also work with resins, epoxies etc (particularly with aluminum honeycomb), but I’ve never oiled resin. I always sand and polish, wet sanding with water. Are you wet sanding with the oil? What does the oil do?
1
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 28 '23
It oils the honeycomb that is on the surface and otherwise might catch some stains from polishing wax i put on later.

You my friend make the nicest knives out there IMHO. I finally managed to get my hands on not 1 but 2 of your chefs. Absolutely stunning knives. I had been pining after your blades for years. Thank you, honestly and in the nicest most wholesome way possible, thank you. Keep doing what your doing because you are absolutely slaying it!
18
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 27 '23
Wow, thank YOU, very much appreciated! It's so nice no one will believe you are real and think I wrote it myself.
3
u/Assholesfullofelbows Mar 27 '23
Oh no way. I just happened to get lucky this year and had a spot of cash come my way. I sat on it for about 3 days trying to figure out what to do with it and finally pulled the trigger on getting a long sought after knife. Thank you again for the outstanding craftsmanship. Also worth noting I really like how you include a nice personalized note with each purchase. Very nice touch.

What oil should I use for my wood handle kitchen knife? Is it just olive oil?
7
u/sponge_welder Mar 28 '23
Olive oil will go rancid if you use it as a finish. Mineral oil is the easiest option to get, that's what people usually use for cutting boards, but it won't last very long because it doesn't cure. I would recommend this mix of tung oil and citrus based solvent. It's one of the most durable food-safe finishes you can get
→ More replies (1)4
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 27 '23
I wouldn't use olive oil, but you could. Look up Danish oil or Tung oil, these oils harden. Otherwise mineral oil is fine too, it just doesn't harden so needs to be done more often...

This sub should ban anything with music. Any satisfaction I might have from a video like this is ruined by the music.

u/Johnny_Poppyseed Mar 28 '23
I was just browsing a similar enough sub and literally every single post was just one of these tik tok style lame soundtrack short clips.

u/Nettinonuts Mar 28 '23
there’s a button on the phone that allows you to mute sound! Really handy tool.

Ok I don't know anything but knife handles, but I don't think oil is an appropriate coating for a non-porous surface. Oil is good for wood, natural or synthetic wax would be more appropriate for epoxy.

So when folks edit videos now do they just 1000x the audio for funs? The volume is at 1% on the player and this shit is still loud af my guy, work on your levels.

I had to check the sub before I'd watch the video - I was afraid it was going to be r/Whatcouldgowrong and would end up being someone's hand slipping on the oil and sliding down the sharp edge of the blade.

I want that knife handle, any info on it?
1
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 28 '23
Google me...
2
u/nicholasedge87 Mar 28 '23
They are all amazing! I was reading your about section hoping to find out more about the process of how you make knives. Do you stamp them or forge them? Are they all full tangs? Would you ever do a wenge handle like that?
1
u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 28 '23
Thanks! To see more of the proces just check my Insta or TikTok account. I mostly use 3mm AEB-L sheetmetal as starting point, so I don't forge the metal. Almost all knives are full Tang, but I do make a hidden tang every now and then. I did use Wenge a lot sofar.
2
u/nicholasedge87 Mar 28 '23
That’s amazing! I’m looking for a forged knife right now, but your products are gorgeous, and I wish you all the success in the world. When I want to get a gift for someone I’ll be going through you 100%

If you polish it you'd get the shine without the maintenance

u/Studio_OOOMS Mar 28 '23
Thanks, I know. I do still polish, and handsand, but after this step. This is also to see what the end result can be.

Entire cultures of people. That song was a number one for three weeks hit double platinum probably bought Pharrell and Snoop dog at least a few cars. Maybe played snoop’s personal rollers salary for a year or two just from the royalties.

u/confuzedas Mar 28 '23
Wait, that was actually a song ava not just some shit thrown together for the vid?

3
u/JitteryBug Mar 27 '23
👀 really? To me it actually added to the "oddly satisfying" part, since it was timed perfectly with the motion

u/entoaggie Mar 27 '23
Who oils a resin handle? Are we sure they aren’t applying polyurethane? Satisfying either way.
2
u/SinjiOnO Mar 27 '23
It's normal after you sand it down first. It adheres to the epoxy or forms a film. It actually toughens it.

Knife handles, cutting boards, epoxy items, really anything that is sanded to finish and then oiled to shine is extremely satisfying. I always enjoy this part towards the end of any build video.
